The YMCA has a long history of serving the military community, starting during the Civil War, with the United States Christian Commission providing various programs, including religious services, educational classes, and recreational activities. During World War I and II, the YMCA extended its services to include canteens, writing kits, religious services, and educational programs while also playing a significant role in recruiting and training soldiers.

Today, the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas continues to serve the military community through its Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) program. The ASYMCA offers a range of services to active-duty military personnel, veterans, and their families, including fitness and recreational programs, educational programs, employment and housing assistance, and family support services.

The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas is dedicated to serving the military community by providing essential resources and support for military personnel, veterans, and their families. Moreover, the YMCA was able to help families during the COVID-19 pandemic by offering free childcare to children of essential workers, including healthcare workers and military personnel. As a proud supporter of the military community, the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas continues to strive to make a significant impact on the lives of those it serves.
