We Prevent Drowning

Maxine, a devoted member of the Y since 2010, recently took the plunge and started swimming lessons, and we couldn’t be more inspired. She shared that while she thought she knew how to swim, she quickly realized there was so much more to learn.

Shirley has been an active member of the YMCA since February 2024. Before joining the class, Shirley didn’t know how to swim. Now, she encourages others not to be afraid and to seize opportunities to learn and grow. Her journey is an excellent reminder that it’s never too late to better yourself.

We Help Kids Succeed

Introducing Greg, one of our dedicated and lead volunteers who makes Bright Beginnings a reality. His commitment brings joy and academic success to local children. Read why Greg enjoys volunteering for Bright Beginnings.

"The YMCA has many great programs serving preschoolers to seniors, but my favorite program is Bright Beginnings. Seeing those young children, who may need a helping hand, get well equipped for school with new clothes and school supplies so that they can show up the first day of class and be just like the other kids, well, that's as good as it gets."

We Prepare Teens for Life

In the summer of 2023, Sanaa decided to join the swim team at the Northumberland Family YMCA. With encouragement from the coaches and support from her family, she was able to complete one of the most challenging events she had ever competed in, the 100 free. By the end of the summer season, Sanaa was able to swim all of the strokes,  learned new techniques, and had more determination than she had started with. With this experience, Sanaa was able to move on to join the NHS Varsity Swim Team, where she competed in the States and Regionals 2024 meet. Throughout all of this, Sanaa learned that she is not just a competitor, but also a beacon of hope for every person who believes that they don’t have a place in sports or swimming.

We Help People Grow Healthier in Spirit, Mind, and Body

William “Doc” has been a devoted member of the YMCA for over 5 years. He regularly visits the Y and is committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. He regularly participates in multiple group exercise classes and has found a real sense of community with other members and participants.

Doc says he really enjoys the time he spends at the Y. The way the classes line up throughout the week allows him to take multiple classes. When asked about his fellow group exercise participants, Doc stated, “We work like a team, so strong and good together. We are always working together, helping each other, picking each other up, and motivating each other.”
