Newport News, VA August 7, 2025 — The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas marked an exciting milestone this August by expanding its Bright Beginnings program into Surry County, Virginia, reaching even more children with essential back-to-school support.

For the first time, 20 students from Surry County were paired with the YMCA and Surry County Public Schools, Board of Supervisors, and Sheriff’s Department volunteers to shop for new school clothes at Target in Williamsburg, VA. These children were matched with “shopping buddies” who helped them select the clothing they needed to walk into the classroom confident, prepared, and ready to learn.

Since 2003, Bright Beginnings has helped nearly 10,000 children across the region start the school year on the right foot with new school clothes and a backpack full of the school supplies. The program provides more than backpacks and sneakers—it instills a sense of belonging and confidence that empowers students to thrive academically and socially. The program is entirely funded by donations made to the YMCA’s Annual Impact Fund.

“As we continue to grow the Bright Beginnings program, we are thrilled to welcome Surry County as our newest partner,” said Adam Klutts, President and CEO of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas. “Expanding into Surry reflects our mission to strengthen communities and ensure every child has what they need to succeed in school and in life.”

The new partnership highlights the YMCA’s commitment to serving all communities, including those where a physical YMCA facility may not yet exist. It’s part of a long-term strategy to deepen impact and broaden access across the Virginia Peninsulas.

“Surry County is proud to be a part of the YMCA’s Bright Beginnings program,” said Dr. Robert Elliott, Jr., Chair of the Surry County Board of Supervisors. “This is a meaningful investment in our children, and we're excited to see the impact it will have on their confidence and success.”

School leaders in Surry County were equally enthusiastic about the partnership. “Our students always come first,” said Dr. Herbert Monroe, Superintendent of Surry County Public Schools. “We are grateful to the YMCA for providing care and support that extends beyond the classroom. This program is a testament to what happens when communities come together to uplift young people.”

The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas looks forward to continuing this partnership and hopes to expand services and support in Surry County in the years ahead.
