Surry County Family YMCA

The YMCA is partnering with Surry County to construct a new YMCA facility in the community. Below are the most up-to-date timelines and draft renderings of this exciting project.

February-Spring 2024
Introductory meeting with county leaders and YMCA begins feasibility study
September-October 2024
Greater Than Analytics conducted the whole market and program study and finalized the report.
November-December 2024
Findings were presented to Surry County leadership and the YMCA’s Capital Development Committee for review and discussion.
February 2025
A high-level review of the market study and strategic implications was provided to the YMCA Board of Directors.
May 2025
YMCA leadership participated in a public information session to share study results, answer community questions, and engage residents in the planning process.
July-December 2025
The Board of Supervisors approved the development and operations agreement. Gro Development hired a YMCA schematic design developer.
November-December 2025
RFQ and interview process for the general contractor and the architect firm
January 2026

Next Steps

January 2026- Selection of an architect firm and a construction management company.
Spring 2026- Finalize design and development. Bidding and pricing of the project.
Summer 2026- Ground lease submitted for review and ratified.
Fall 2026- Construction begins.
Winter 2026- Creation of YMCA volunteer and capital campaign committees.
Summer-Fall 2026- Review and begin implementation of programs, hire and train key staff.
Fall 2027- Projected opening date
